Don't make these tuxedo fashion mistakes!

Tuxedos always make a fashion statement.  They are classic, but you want to be up-to-date and fashionable.  What should you look for so that you can look your best and be in style today?

Colored tuxes are out.  Gray or white tuxes are strictly for weddings, never for a formal event or formal dinner.  Black tuxedos are always current.  All collar styles and multiple buttons up to 4 is still acceptable.  The double breasted style is more of a 70's thing and not great for today.

Cummerbunds are a real fashion faux paus.  Go with wearing a vest.

Colored vests are great for prom, especially if you're trying to match your date's dress color.  Colored vests are less important in weddings.  You can still use them to match wedding colors or to put your groomsmen in, but black or silver are more traditional and more formal..  Black or silver patterned or plain doesn't matter.

Bow ties or winsor (long ties) are both acceptable.  The bow tie is always more formal and classic.  It is the safe bet if you're in doubt.  Don't forget the matching pocket square (handerchief), it adds class to your look.

Laydown collars are fashionable with either tie.  The wing collar shirt is fading, but still can be used with either tie, but more popular with the bow tie.

French cuffs, or false french cuffs with cufflinks are a must.  A true french cuff folds back on itself and the cufflinks are used to go through all 4 layers of the cuff.  A false french cuff is like a regular cuffed shirt but has button holes (as well as regular buttons) for cufflinks.  Use the cufflinks.
